Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, for today, I’m suggesting a little-remembered space shuttle-themed flick called “SpaceCamp” and it suffered greatly from being released in 1986, which was the year of the shuttle Challenger’s explosion tragedy.
Although a “kids” flick, “SpaceCamp” is actually watchable for adults, but you will have to endure some stereotypes and a talking robot that most likely was supposed to spur a marketing campaign that never took off (no pun intended).
“SpaceCamp” is the story of a group of teenagers who go to the real Space Camp. They each have packed their bags and brought individual but stereotypical baggage to the summer adventure: the “cool” kid; the “focused” kid; the “brainy” kid; and the “young” kid – a very youthful Joaquin Phoenix (Leaf Phoenix in the credits and his birth name is Joaquin Rafael Bottom).
Adult co-stars are Kate Capshaw and Tom Skerrit, while the “kids” are represented by Lea Thompson and Kelly Preston.

Of course, “SpaceCamp” has the group go through the usual stuff: bonding, failure and ultimately a shuttle training “problem” that sends the group into orbit. It should be “sigh,” but the movie works and would have done better at the box office if not having been released to a still-stunned public just months after the national tragedy of the fate of the Challenger.
So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and find “SpaceCamp” because I know you probably haven’t seen it yet. It is a variety of streaming services. Find it! Watch it! Don’t worry, you’ll thank me later.
