Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, today in 2026 (Thursday, March 5) is the annual “Reel Film Day” in which the cinematic medium of the use of 35mm film is celebrated in this now-digital age. So, let’s look at a film co-starring film legend Cary Grant and Leslie Caron called “Father Goose.”

“Father Goose” is set at the start of World War II in the Pacific with Grant as an ex-pat from the United States blissfully with a cheerful insouciance trying to ignore a world war. He gets roped into becoming a “coastwatcher” (a lone military adviser or civilian volunteer on an island who monitored Japanese aircraft and shipping movements and was supported by indigenous people — although none assists Grant in the film … click on the link to see a complete history).

Grant has to fall into line through first threats to seize his boat and through whiskey. After a time, he is sent to rescue a fellow coastwatcher, but, after finding out that the man had been killed in an attack by the Japanese, he winds up having to shepherd an unlike group of schoolgirls who are being cared for by Caron. So, Grant, after getting the code name early, becomes a true “Father Goose.”

The stereotypes then to pile up fast in “Father Goose,” but they don’t sink this cinematic ship: They quarrel; she dismisses and criticizes him; the schoolgirls find him intriguing; they finally bond; some things happen; and **SPOILER ALERT BUT NOT UNEXPECTED ** they fall in love and everyone lives happily ever after!

While a film set in WWII and much of the drama is war-focused, the film is primarily about Grant, Caron and their bickering until love blossoms. Co-star Trevor Howard is the steadying influence in the smallish supporting cast and there’s really no one else but Grant, Caron and some of the girls to make any mark on screen.

So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “Father Goose” on this “Reel Film Day” of March 5. “Father Goose” can be found either free or for rent on a variety of streaming services. Find it! Watch it! Don’t worry, you’ll thank me later for both “Father Goose” as well as “Reel Film Day.”
