Ticket to the Movies: ‘The Beekeeper’ isn’t a keeper, but it’s watchable

Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, today I’m dipping back into the action genre to recommend “The Beekeeper” with Jason Statham. Here’s an inadequate film that is actually watchable and is basically Statham being Statham for much of the movie.

In “The Beekeeper,” you get Statham as a retired government assassin who you really don’t want to piss off. BTW … a “Beekeeper” is the strong arm of the secret government group that Statham has left.

Well, someone does through a telephone scam situation and when he destroys the first boiler room of phone scammers, you know everyone’s gonna cheer.

Actually, “The Beekeeper” had potential because of its somewhat creative plot, a decent supporting cast and, as I already noted, Statham being Statham and the resulting solid action/fight scenes (I was especially appreciative when he tied a bad guy to the back of a pickup truck and then had it drive itself off an open drawbridge).

Although most of the supporting cast is talented – just take Minnie Driver in a film she shouldn’t have made – it doesn’t translate to making “The Beekeeper” even somewhat great. Casts can make or break a film, but in this case they had little chance beyond the action sequences.

My favorite action scene is when the new “Beekeeper” challenges Statham at a convenience store gas pump island (her truck as a mini-gun mounted on it!). It’s a wonderful scene and worth the price of the entire flick (actually, I streamed it for free).

So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “The Beekeeper.” It is available on streaming services either fee or a rental fee. Find it! Watch it! Don’t worry, you’ll thank me later for “The Beekeeper.”
