Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, after just delving into some puerile, heavy-R-rated comedy, I’ll take a different tack today by recommending “You Kill Me” starring Ben Kingsley, Téa Leoni and Luke Wilson. Here’s the dark story with a side of strained comedy.
In “You Kill Me,” you have the story of Kingsley as an alcoholic hitman for the mob in Buffalo. He clears snow from his front steps by taking a swig from a bottle, dropping it on the next step and, after clearing the snow off one step, picks it up and drops, drinks from it and then drops it on the next step.
Well, Kingsley screws up an important hit because of his alcoholism and is sent to San Francisco to dry out. Most of the story of “You Kill Me” is centered in San Francisco, where he is given a job in a funeral home (the first of several ironies in his new life). He meets and becomes involved with Leoni (relationship) and Wilson (his sponsor in AA).
While “You Kill Me” mines the dark side of human personality, there is more dark comedy, such as when, at an AA meeting, Kingsley tells how he is a mob hitman and about some of his kills. After, Wilson asks Kingsley if he should have done that, Kingsley replies, “It’s Alcoholics
Anonymous.” Wilson retorts, “Somehow I don’t really feel that’s what they had in mind when they came up with the name, but you never know.” Another scene is where Kingsley makes amends to his victims by sending their families gift cards!
“You Kill Me” spins out with Kingsley getting back on track; his relationship with Leoni continuing to develop; and the climax arrives through him being needed back home to settle a gangland score in a most deadly way.
So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “You Kill Me.” It is available on several subscription services or to rent on several other streaming services. So, find it! Watch it! Don’t worry, you’ll thank me later for “You Kill Me.”
