Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, today I’m recommending a thriller called “The Eiger Sanction” that was directed by and stars Clint Eastwood and his co-stars were George Kennedy and Jack Cassidy and features the sport of mountain climbing.
“The Eiger Sanction” from 1975 is about Eastwood’s character: “Dr. Jonathan Hemlock,” who is an mountain-climbing art professor, who supplements his income and satisfies his appetite for buying classical artworks by being a paid assassin. Yep! An all-around believable plot! Well, the best-seller of the same title from 1972 by the author known as Trevanian, but whose birth name was the more common Rodney William Whitaker, is pretty sharp and an interesting read (even today). BTW: The author hated the movie (a mountain climber died during stunt work).
In “The Eiger Sanction,” Eastwood has been trying to distance himself from his career as an assassin, but gets pulled back in through the killing of an agent, who was one of his best friends. The investigation reveals the killer will be part of a team that is scheduled to attempt to climb the “North Face” of the mountain called the Eiger in Switzerland.
In getting started, Eastwood heads out to a resort and training spot for climbers that is run by his old friend Kennedy. During his visit, the plot begins its complexity through Cassidy, who is a former friend, but one who is now an enemy and meets an end that is at the same time creative as well as prosaic.
The story of “The Eiger Sanction” comes to a climax on the mountain, but the mystery behind the story doesn’t actually get solved until the denouement.
So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “The Eiger Sanction.” It is available on a limited number of streaming services. So, find it! Watch it! Don’t worry, you’ll thank me later for “The Eiger Sanction.”
