The third Saturday in May of each year is national Learn to Swim Day. Since today is the third Saturday in May of 2026 (May 16, to be exact), Here is my “Beginner Swimmer” badge from the American Red Cross that I earned in 1960! I’ve kept it throughout the decades! Since I was born and raised in South Florida, Iearned to swim at young age – unlike more than a few people at that time. In fact, I was always surprised to meet someone who said, “I don’t know how to swim” because virtually every youngster I grew up with learned early like myself. It is especially important to teach young children how to swim because of the prevalence of pools and other bodies of water in our lives from lakes to oceans (I was a child of the Atlantic) and the Gulf of Mexico. So, make contact with your local Red Cross to find out about where you or your child or children can sign up!
