Ticket to the Movies: ‘Used Cars’ is simply fall-down funny

Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, let’s get back on the comedy track and without a doubt one of the most hilarious, little-remembered films is “Used Cars” from 1980, with Kurt Russell, Jack Warden, Gerritt Graham and Deborah Harmon. You even get Al “The Munsters” Lewis as a judge with a miniature gallows and electric chair on his podium!

“Used Cars” is the story of “Rudy” played by Russell. He’s a fast-talking con man who lures customers to the used car lot where he works with currency tied to a fishing pole’s line or using strippers or even the most over-the-top, down-on-your-knees funny scenes of breaking into television broadcasts to air “commercials” where his crew blows up vehicles on a competitor’s lot.

You also get Warden as twin brothers who own competing used car lots across the street from each other and one of them dies and is buried in a vintage car in the lot’s grease pit! I just have to keep using the exclamation point.

However, “Used Cars” doesn’t go completely vulgar with the humor (such as, say, the disgusting things said by Robert De Niro in “Dirty Grandpa”) and one of the funniest jokes is where you get Russell only telling the punch line (“Don’t ask me. I’m just a farmer!”) and you know it was a sensationally crude joke!

With “Used Cars,” you get everything from slapstick to canine urination and it’s all funny. Russell is great in his manic, free-wheeling character, but equally good are his sidekicks that include Graham and even “Lenny and Squiggy” from “Laverne & Shirley” as high-tech whizzes who need to leave by the office’s back door as long as it is daylight.

Russell keeps playing games because he’s trying to round up enough money to buy a political appointment, but winds up conflicted in trying to be the nice guy to save the car lot. The movie winds up with a car chase across the desert.

So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “Used Cars.” It can be found on two subscription services and is available to rent or buy on several other streaming services. So, find it! Watch it! Don’t worry, you’ll thank me later for “Used Cars.”
