Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, I’ll bring us to the remake of “The Italian Job” starring Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron, Edward Norton, Jason Statham, Seth Green and Donald Sutherland. The reboot of “The Italian Job” arrived in 2003, following the original in 1969 starring Michael Caine.
“The Italian Job” is both a caper flick (actually, two capers in the same movie) as well as a vehicle for revenge after a gang that stole millions in gold in a heist in Italy is betrayed by one of their own members (Norton). The treachery costs the life of Sutherland and Wahlberg sets off on a trail of vengeance that ropes in the high-tech daughter of Sutherland (Theron).
What’s left of the gang reunites in “The Italian Job” and sets about extracting revenge for Sutherland’s murder and the theft of the gold stolen by the gang. “The Italian Job” takes time to explain both capers and has really solid special effects in both capers: In Italy, underwater and a boat chase scene; and in the U.S. a wonderful car chase with a fleet of Mini Coopers.
Not only is “The Italian Job” intricately layered with both its screenplay and production and stunt work on the capers, but you get a really solid cast doing solid work. The only slight discordant note is that I haven’t seen Wahlberg as the leading-man type of actor. He does a good job here, but an actor with better thespian chops could have elevated the main character.
The film also is pleasing because it manages to overcome stereotypes necessary in the film (betrayal, redemption and then “everybody’s happy at the end, except for the bad guy”) that sinks so many other cinematic ships.
So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “The Italian Job.” It is easily found and available through a variety of streaming services. So, find it! Watch it! Don’t worry, you’ll thank me later for “The Italian Job.”
