Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, let’s go today with a World War II story, but this time on the Eastern Front, where Nazi Germany battled Communist Russia. The film “Enemy at the Gates” is a terrific WWII drama about a duel between two snipers through the rubble of the destroyed city of Stalingrad.

“Enemy at the Gates” has a top-shelf cast that includes two-time Oscar nominee Jude Law, four-time Oscar nominee Ed Harris, Oscar winner and nominee Rachel Weisz, Primetime Emmy nominee Ralph Fiennes and Oscar nominee Bob Hoskins. You won’t find a much better cast in any film.

Law plays the Russian sniper, whose efforts are being promoted by his Communist masters as the epitome of the Russian fighting spirit. Harris is the German super-sniper sent to kill Law and so develops the duel that is “Enemy at the Gates.” Weisz is the Russian woman in the Red Army who becomes the love interest of both Law and Fiennes, who plays the Soviet official who promotes the public relations for Laws’ effort.

The most over-the-top work in “Enemy at the Gates” is by Hoskins, who plays the merciless and cruel Communist authority Nikita Kruschev, who supports the murderous Russian leader Josef Stalin through intimidation and death. Of course, in real life, Kruschev would go on to lead the Soviet Union after Stalin’s death and Hoskins elevates the role with anger, strength shown by the minor despot then serving the major despot.

Above it all, Law gets zoned in on the duel with Harris. “Enemy at the Gates” is as much a study in the two men as it does showing a small slice of the nasty battle through the rubble of the city. Of course, “Enemy at the Gates” comes to a climax you see coming from the moment the duel begins, but it is handled so well that it doesn’t come off at all as stereotypical.

So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “Enemy at the Gates.” It is available to stream on several subscription services and can be rented on other streaming platforms. So, find it! Watch it! Don’t worry, you’ll thank me later for “Enemy at the Gates.”
