Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, today, let’s examine “TAG: The Assassination Game” and it’s one of two films in just about the smallest genre of cinema to come out of Hollyweird: Films about a role-playing game called “Killer,” or it was sometimes known as “Assassin.” Players chase each other and “kill” them with a suction cup from a toy gun, a bit of water from a squirt gun.
“TAG: The Assassination Game” co-stars Robert Carradine and Linda Hamilton and they’re students at a university where the current game unfolds. She’s a top player and he’s on the student newspaper (remember newspapers?) and he becomes enamored with her as he starts to write about the game for his publication.
BTW, can you imagine such a game at any school today, university or otherwise? Students running around pretending to “kill” each other? You’d have a lockdown in less than a minute and black gunship helicopter hovering in 10 minutes! All of it would be followed up by many mind-numbing sessions with the school counselor.
“TAG: The Assassination Game” finds that the very best player gets “eliminated” by a lucky shot from a suction-cup gun and is thereby “killed” and eliminated from the current game. Well, that pushes him around the mental bend and he gets a real gun and really kills the other player. After that, he’s playing for real.
Of course, Carradine is on the trail and uncovers the reality that’s entered the game. Both he and Hamilton do a decent job with their characters and the limited supporting cast is topped by Kristine DeBell as Hamilton’s friend and Bruce Abbott as the crazed killer and who would marry Hamilton in real life after meeting her while making this flim.
You won’t find much in the way of deep thoughts in “TAG: The Assassination Game,” but it’s a fun flick and you see a couple of stars-to-be with Michael Winslow of “Police Academy” fame and future Oscar winner Forest Whitaker in his first film and you certainly remember him better for his second (which arrived the same year as “TAG: The Assassination Game.”
So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “TAG: The Assassination Game.” It is difficult to find on any streaming services, but does appear sometimes – you’ll have to search for it. Don’t worry, if you can find it, you’ll thank me later if you watch “TAG: The Assassination Game.”
