Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, it’s officially summer in 2026 and so let’s take a look at “The 40 Year Old Virgin” and its puerile humor as it nears its 21st anniversary this coming August. Of course, “The 40 Year Old Virgin” is best remembered for star Steve Carell’s chest hair-waxing scene and it never fails to be funny, no matter how many times you’ve seen it.

The best thing about “The 40 Year Old Virgin” is that while it is a totally R-rated flick that leaves you going “OMG!” from beginning to end, it is a film with endearing characters and endearing moments that you might not consider would be in such a film.

“The 40 Year Old Virgin” stars Carell and has a simply wonderful supporting cast of truly funny actors such as Paul Rudd, Seth Rogen, Jane Lynch and Jonah Hill (he has a very small role) as well as two-time Oscar nominee Catherine Keener, who is object of Carell’s desire.

Carell is “The 40 Year Old Virgin” and he works at a Best Buy-like store and is quiet and retiring, while his co-workers are simply off-the-chart, each in his or her own way. Carell meets Keener and becomes entangled in her life, especially her relationship with her daughter. Carell manages to inject calm and a certain innocence into everyone’s life, even if they don’t see it.

“The 40 Year Old Virgin” is another example of R-rated humor that translated into immediate classic comedy, but it also has dramatic components worthy of worse films that received Oscar nominations. “The 40 Year Old Virgin” didn’t get any nominations for an Oscar or any Golden Globe, but it did earn a win for Carell and four nominations from the MTV Movie + TV Awards (and that was basically the target audience for the flick).

Oh, and the film’s original title did not have “dashes.” Those were added later. Hollywood does love to re-write everything!

So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “The 40 Year Old Virgin.” It is part of a limited number of subscription networks and can be rented on a variety of streaming services. I have no doubt that you’ll thank me later when you watch “The 40 Year Old Virgin” today!
