Ticket to the Movies: ‘The Killer Elite’ isn’t Peckinpah’s best, but it’s good

Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, you don’t often go wrong watching a film from legendary director Sam Peckinpah, unless you want to test your gag reflex and look at “Convoy,” so let’s look today at his OK effort with “The Killer Elite” co-starring James Caan and Robert Duvall.

I’d say that Peckinpah’s best effort is “The Getaway” with Steve McQueen and Ali MacGraw, followed by his iconic and seminal Western called “The Wild Bunch.” His only effort set in World War II is the also, just-OK effort called “Cross of Iron” with James Coburn and Maximillan Schell.

With “The Killer Elite,” you have Caan and Duvall as contract workers for a company under contract with the CIA. Duvall is the treacherous one of the pair and during an assignment where he turned traitor, he shoots Caan in an elbow and a knee because he just wanted to maim him and not kill him.

The rest of “The Killer Elite” is Caan’s recovery and ultimate return to battle against Duvall.

“The Killer Elite” has a small but impressive supporting cast that is led by Burt Young, Bo Hopkins and Arthur Hill. In a smaller role but one worthy of comment is by Mako, who Caan has been hired to protect.

Released in 1975, “The Killer Elite” incorporates martial arts as a thread through much of the film. Martial arts were a force (no pun intended) at the time because of the emergence of Bruce Lee as an international action star and his special brand of mayhem.

“The Killer Elite” isn’t a top-of-resume effort for any of the actors, but its whole ultimately grades out through Peckinpah’s signature style that includes slow-motion violence and an underlying morality play.

So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “The Killer Elite.” It is available with ads on several subscription services as well as being available for rent on other streaming platforms. You’ll thank me later when you watch “The Killer Elite” today!
