Today (July 4, 2026), for a “Way, Way Back!” feature, I’m posting this image of my first “important” press pass as a rookie reporter here in Naples, Fla. I’d been on the job only four months when I was part of the reporting team to cover the visit by Vice President George H.W. Bush (he had been on the job only two months when he came to visit Naples). The U.S. Secret Service did vetting of those of us in the “press corps” and I was given this pass to clip onto my shirt (lanyards would become a staple much later). I found this pass as I was recently decluttering my closet at our home here in Naples, Fla., and I took the photograph this morning. PS: I used Photoshop to remove my full name from the pass as a matter of privacy.
