Ticket to the Movies: ‘Gotcha!’ should be considered a quiet espionage gem

Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, last month I suggested a film in just about the smallest genre ever from Hollywood: a movie about a game where you pretend to kill someone … on a school campus … with a paintball gun!

The film was “TAG: The Assassination Game.” However, there’s a second but better film in that genre: “Gotcha!” with Anthony Edwards and Linda Fiorentino and an OK, but undistinguished supporting cast. “Gotcha!” starts out as a somewhat quirky campus-style flick, but turns basically “James Bond-ian” as the  story moves from California to Paris to the the then-East Germany, Berlin and back home to California.

Edwards is the college student enthralled by fantasy game where opponents use guile, their wits and a paintball gun to “kill” each other (imagine running around any college campus today “shooting” people). He and his roommate go to Paris for spring break and he becomes involved with Fiorentino.

You’ll have to watch “Gotcha!” for the full effect of the byzantine underpinning of the story. Just suffice to say that “Gotcha!” isn’t as shallow as you might imagine or initially perceive. In some way, it easily qualifies as an underrated espionage flick nearly worthy of a John le Carré story with a little urban gang influence at the end.

In “Gotcha!,” Edwards does a workmanlike job but it is Fiorentino who does the heavy lifting on the acting front. She plays the role of the ingenuine to near perfection and I’ve enjoyed every single one of her efforts on the big screen from “Vision Quest” from the same year as “Gotcha!,” to “Dogma” to “Men in Black.” She has not had an acting credit since 2009 and was embroiled at that time in a controversial case involving Hollywood and federal agents (the Pellicano case).

So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “Gotcha!.” It can be rented on a variety of streaming services. Without any doubt, you will thank me later when you watch “Gotcha!” today!
