Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, let’s step into the time machine again for “Pal Joey” from 1957 with Frank Sinatra, Rita Hayworth and Kim Novak. Here’s your basic “Sinatra” or dance or romantic flick from the 1950s. Musicals ruled at that time.
To be completely transparent, I reviewed “Pal Joey” because I needed a film to fill in a movie from 1957 and had an unappetizing choice on the menu. I’ve reviewed a film from each year from 1954 through 2025 (I’m still looking for a movie I can stomach that was released in 2026) and “Pal Joey” filled in 1957. I even “reviewed” a film I didn’t watch to fill in the letter “X” with my off-hand, non-vieweing look at “X-Men” from 2000.
However, I found that for all its deficiencies, “Pal Joey” was OK. Sinatra is Sinatra; and you might want to introduce yourself to Hayworth and Novak. It was a different day-and-age in both cinema and culture and “Pal Joey” is watchable and easy to enjoy seeing a bit of life in the 1950s as shown by American cinema.
Here is the “Pal Joey” story from my full review: “The heart of the story is that Sinatra wants to open his own club; Hayworth has the money; and Novak is the emotional monkey wrench with which the other two have to deal. Sinatra gets, then loses, his club; Hayworth gets her previous flame and then loses him; and Novak rides an emotional roller coaster until the final credits.”
So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch the worthy “Pal Joey.” It is available for rent via a variety of streaming services. You will thank me later when you watch “Pal Joey” today!
