Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, let’s keep a “summer” theme with “The Cannonball Run” with Burt Reynolds, Dom DeLuise, Roger Moore, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and a supporting cast of nearly 100!
“The Cannonball Run” is one of those summer “fluff” flicks where you don’t have to know much about any plot (this one is about a coast-to-coast auto race), but just have to sit back and enjoy the ride (pun intended).
“The Cannonball Run” has Reynolds and DeLuise in a formerly annual “unofficial” race from New York to coastal California. It was legend and more recently technical when the “unofficial” winner clocked in about five hours quicker than those who competed before in the race: Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash.
A better film about the race is “The Gumball Rally” (click here to read my review), but “The Cannonball Run” and its inadequate sequel doesn’t make any attempt at anything other fun from the large cast, including Jackie Chan, Farrah Fawcett and in one of the most embarrassingly stereotypical characters ever on the big screen: Jamie Farr as “Shiek.”
With “The Cannonball Run,” you get hijinks including a car in a pool (a la Keith Moon of “The Who”), supercars going superfast and professional athletes (such as Terry Bradshaw and Joe Klecko) just having fun in cars … and Bradshaw has one with musical legend Mel Tillis where both are holding cans of Budweiser!
I’d like to give you more details about the race in“The Cannonball Run,” but, like many of Reynolds’ movies, you just need to sit back; pop or pour a cold one; and enjoy the show.
So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “The Cannonball Run.” It is available for rent via a variety of streaming platforms. You will thank me later when you watch “The Cannonball Run” today!
