Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, let’s take a look at “North Dallas Forty,” which is a flawed film starring Nick Nolte and and Mac Davis that is based on what I believe is the best sports novel of the 20th century by Peter Gent, a former NFL player.
“North Dallas Forty” is the fictional story of an aging pro football player (Nolte) who’s finding himself becoming more and more marginalized on a team in Dallas despite his talent. He is the totally cool and fun friend of the star QB (Davis), but not popular with some of his most violent and aggressive teammates.
The story of “North Dallas Forty” on film tries to expose the back-stabbing, hypocritical team coaches and league officials. However, it doesn’t do as good a job of dissecting the scumbaggery of team coaches and executives as does the novel. However, G.D. Spradlin does a solid job as he plays the manipulative head coach modeled after the Dallas Cowboys’ Tom Landry (Gent played for the Cowboys in real life).
Even better is Charles Durning as an assistant coach who, as I wrote in my full review of “North Dallas Forty,” is “… a Maalox-swigging volcano of coaching frustration, aggravation and aggression. Durning is so good at being mad that you believe that his head will explode at any second when he’s yelling at the players.”
The shenanigans of the players in “North Dallas Forty” include a party, drugs and drinking. Of course, everything is to excess.
So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “North Dallas Forty.” It is available for rent via a variety of streaming platforms. You will thank me later when you watch “North Dallas Forty” today!
