Ticket to the Movies: ‘Real Genius’ is a really neat comedy

Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, let’s stay on a comedy track today with “Real Genius” starring Val Kilmer (in only his second film after “Top Secret!”) and here’s a great comedy that shows an R-rating isn’t necessary to tickle your funnybone (wow, going totally old-school on that comment).

“Real Genius” is the story of a high school prodigy who gets early admission to one of the country’s most prestigious universities and be the protégé of a world-famous professor (who’s also a tee-vee star). However, it is Kilmer’s film, once you see him in a dorm room – he and the younger “genius” become roommates.

Of course, “Real Genius” is fleshed out with a bunch of eccentric or otherwise odd students and the hijinks they create and encounter in pursuit of the professor’s goal: a super-powerful laser that has an underlying purpose that the professor is purposely not mentioning to the students.

The supporting cast of “Real Genius” isn’t a blockbuster, but William Atherton as the professor and several of the students do good work (including Robert Prescott as the brown-nosing teaching assistant; Gabriel Jarret as the prodigy; and Ed Lauter as a stiff government official and his amorous daughter, who is played by Deborah Foreman in a tiny role).

Well, “the gang,” which includes a former student who is perfecting the art of being a hermit living in the dorm’s basement, gets wrapped up in trying to blend in a little fun while being pressured in the university environment.

“Real Genius” moves smoothly through the story and, while nowhere near having a great screenplay, does a good job matching a series of events while not falling victim to the urge of just smash-cutting to the next adventure.

Kilmer has frenetic energy throughout “Real Genius” and works the role with aplomb that belies the fact he was in only his second film, which has the climax of the laser being shot from a B-1 bomber and destroying the professor’s new home.

So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “Real Genius.” It is available on a variety of rental platforms. You will thank me later if you find it and watch “Real Genius.”
