Ticket to the Movies: ‘Moonraker’ is just a so-so ‘Bond’ effort

Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, let’s continue today in the world of “Bond, James Bond” with another so-so effort (by “007” standards) with “Moonraker” starring the second-best Bond: Roger Moore. The supporting cast, as usual with “007” flicks isn’t anything to write home about, but does have the interesting henchman character of “Jaws.”

Where “James Bond”  has battled foes on land, on sea and even under the sea, “Moonraker” has him battling in space! The franchise has touched on the technology of space before, but “Moonraker” has Bond in orbit.

“Moonraker” has a supervillain who wants to eradicate human life on earth through poison (from orchids!) that only kills humans. Then, the supervillain will repopulate the globe with his carefully matched set of people he has selected as the future master  of the planet.

“Moonraker” has all the usual earmarks of a “Bond” film: the international scope of the villainy, the international locales (especially nice is scenes from Rio Carnival); the technology (space shuttles and a space station); and all the wonderful views as only the “007” franchise can provide.

Moore’s compatriot in “Moonraker” is former model Lois Chiles as “Holly Goodhead” (a lame attempt to replicate the late Honor Blackman as “Pussy Galore” in “Goldfinger”). Chiles doesn’t bring any magic to the character and never manages to elevate herself past “ho-hum” and only Carole Bouquet as “Melina Havelock” would be worse two years later in “For Your Eyes Only.”

Although “Moonraker” is far from the best in the franchise, it is still a “007” flick and that’s enough to grab your attention!

So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “Moonraker.” It is available on a variety of rental platforms. You will thank me later if you find it and watch “Moonraker.”
