Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, I’m headed back to the stomach-churning part of cinema: The simply awful, crappy film. Today, let’s go with “Dirty Work” starring Norm Macdonald and a supporting cast which could have done better, but managed to shovel a steaming pile into your lap.
Here’s an excerpt from my full review: “Macdonald is horrible in ‘Dirty Work;’ Lange shouldn’t have been in it; Chevy Chase is an embarrassment; the late Chris Farley is uncredited; Jack Warden would hang his head in shame if he was alive today; and I’m not going to say anything negative about the legendary Don Rickles’ effort.”
The story of “Dirty Work” isn’t important or at any level covered by “suspend your disbelief.” It’s about a guy who tries to make a business out of getting paid to pull nasty pranks on bad people.
“Dirty Work” is doomed by having a smidgen of creativity through vignettes, which are nothing more one-liners in a comedian’s stand-up show. Yes, there are parts that range from amusing to hilarious in “Dirty Work,” the sum is just a steaming lump on the sidewalk.
I simply cannot understand that, after viewing the “final cut” of the film, that those responsible didn’t just toss it into the garbage and admit they flushed their money down a large drain.
I’m not a great fan of Macdonald, but his sarcastic wit and droll, deadpan delivery can be effective. Just not on the big screen and “Dirty Work” is the apotheosis of how to take some creativity and turn it into compost.
So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “Dirty Work.” It is available on a variety of subscription services and available to rent on other platforms. You will thank me later if you find it and watch “Dirty Work.”
