U.S. flags have, by presidential decree, begun being flown at half-staff in honor of the life of entertainer Dolly Parton. She passed yesterday (Aug. 25, 2026) at the age of 80 of cancer. Dolly was a beloved figure in entertainment and also for her always expressing a positive view of life and for being kind and understanding – traits so sorely missing in today’s society. I took this photo at the Headquarters branch of the Collier County Public Library today (Aug. 26), which is near our home here in Naples, Fla. BTW … there is a protocol for the “official” flying of U.S. flags … and it begins with a presidential decree. Remember, too, that traditionally, half-staff is for land-based flagpoles, while half-mast is aboard U.S.-chartered ships.
