Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, let’s again show how an original is so much better than the sequel with “Going In Style” from 1979 with three screen legends and not the tepid “reboot” that shouldn’t have been made.
“Going In Style” co-stars Oscar winners George Burns and Art Carney and Oscar nominee and legendary acting coach Lee Strasberg as three widowed retirees totally bored with life and the financial squeeze that the economy at any time can produce for the elderly. Naturally, to spice up their lives, they turn to … bank robbery!

However, “Going In Style” isn’t just a comedy about three geezers who embark on a little bank robbery for adventure. The heart of the film has a darkness about aging and its effects on the aged. None of that turns out well and is absolutely no laughing matter.

“Going In Style” has Burns as the sparkplug for the trio and he gets the notion about robbing the bank. Along the way, as they first discuss whether or not to rob the bank; to planning; and then to actually doing the job. For the drama, you get to know each man’s back-story of success, failure and regrets. It’s somber and not much fun as the aged look in a mirror.

The most dramatic moment in “Going In Style” is when Strasberg spills his emotional guts over the memory of spanking one of his children. It is a powerful scene from an acting giant who stood only 5-foot-5 (and was “Hyman Roth” in a particularly good movie about a certain Mafia family).
“Going In Style” has an almost subliminal way of making you uncomfortable, especially as you get to know Burns, Carney and Strasberg as basically decent, honest men who find themselves trapped in a calendar with its pages turning at a relentless tedium and memories both solid and weak.
I’m not going to spoil “Going In Style” with any specifics of the plot, but let me just note that it’s not all unicorns and blessed sunsets for our trio.
So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch the original “Going In Style.” It is available for rent on several streaming platforms. You will thank me later, if you find and watch “Going In Style.”
