Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, let’s go with one of the few remakes that equal or in some way better the original: “The Thomas Crown Affair” from 1999 with Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo and a limited, but solid, supporting cast including Denis Leary.

“The Thomas Crown Affair” has Brosnan as the bored billionaire who manages a $100 million art theft and Russo,as the hot-shot insurance investigator who uncovers Brosnan’s crime and does an emotional fall for him as well. Leary plays the cop and Ben Gazzara has a small, but competent spot as Brosnan’s attorney.

The film became immediately noted for how hot the pairing of Brosnan and Russo made the film. Their chemistry was from sexual tension in conversation to sex on a staircase to their fling on a beach in the Caribbean.

The “hotness” of “The Thomas Crown Affair” was accelerated by Hollywood standards because Russo was 45 when the film was released and Brosnan was 46. The duo had complete chemistry that Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway never achieved in the original from 1968.

“The Thomas Crown Affair” is a somewhat caper film, in that Brosnan has a caper. However, you know the caper from the start and the meat of the film is Russo’s unmasking of the crook and, along the way, how she fell for the guy.

Director John McTiernan takes time over 113 minutes to make the film flow, but don’t worry, “The Thomas Crown Affair” flows right along at a brisk pace without appearing to rush anything.

Sadly, it appears the complete lack of creativity is bringing back another remake in 2027, with today’s “woke” concept of having remake with a black “Thomas Crown.” Without a doubt, the film, woke or not, will be a complete failure compared the first two films as Hollyweird just cannot avoid creativity today from trying to mine dollars from yesterday. Sigh.

So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch the “The Thomas Crown Affair.” You can find it for rent on a variety of streaming platforms. You will thank me later, if you watch or re-watch “The Thomas Crown Affair.”
