Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, let’s go back to 1967 for director Mike Nichols’ absolutely perfect “The Graduate” with Dustin Hoffman, Anne Bancroft and Katherine Ross. Here is one of the all-time legendary great motion pictures!
When I began writing reviews of movies in 2014 for this blog, I didn’t want to review well-know, legendary or films that would need a real professional reviewer’s eye. However, I decided to review “The Graduate” because of just how deep and wonderful it is from all respects, as compared the overwhelming volume of crap showing up today in theaters and streaming onto your big-screen tee-vee!
I write “perfect” about “The Graduate” because I believe it was the best picture of year, but didn’t win the Oscar. Its cast is completely top-shelf with headliners Hoffman and Bancroft as, respectively, the directionless college student (Hoffman) who winds up in bed first with the cougar’s cougar (Bancroft) and then her daughter (Katherine Ross). It was an immediate hit and the soundtrack featuring Paul Simon and Art Garfunkle was equally top-notch (and they weren’t even nominated for best song).
I’ll leave just about the whole of “The Graduate” for you to enjoy (or again and again).
A trivia note about “The Graduate:” Hoffman and Bancroft were five years and 11 months apart in age (they were 30 and 36 when the film was released) and she was just eight years older than Katherine Ross, who plays her college-age daughter. The actor playing Hoffman’s father was only 10 years older than him.
Another trivia note: You’ll find a neat group of “uncredited” actors including Richard Dreyfuss (in his second film; both uncredited); Mike (TV’s “M*A*S*H”) Farrell as a bellhop; two-time Oscar nominee-to-be Elaine May as a “girl with note for Benjamin;” and the voice of Bob Eubanks hosting an episode of TV’s “The Newlywed Game.”
So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “The Graduate.” You can find it on a limited number of subscription services and for rent on a few streaming platforms. You will thank me later, if you watch or re-watch “The Graduate.”
