Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, let’s take a look at the little-remembered thriller based on the best-selling novel of the same title by the late Frederick Forsyth: “The Odessa File.”
In its entirety, “The Odessa File” spells out how desperate and murderous members of Hitler’s SS escaped from justice in the post-World War II era. It is a story of a young(ish) German journalist, who takes it upon himself to track down one of the notorious killers who served in the SS. The man’s motivation is the easily detected climax of the film.
“The Odessa File” stars Jon Voight and Maximilian Schell, with Schell giving a near-Oscar level performance in his brief time on screen as the former Nazi concentration camp commandant. Although the novel is very detailed in outlining the crimes and methods of the SS and its murderous, sadistic members, the movie manages to bridge what could have been storytelling gaps.
Unfortunately with “The Odessa File,” Voight comes off too often as being too “forced” in the delivery of making his character come to life. He sounds too many times as if he’s failed an audition for a dinner theater production, rather than what was then a major motion picture.
The supporting cast for “The Odessa File” doesn’t disappoint, but the members also do not distinguish themselves by managing to elevate their characters.
So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “The Odessa File.” It is available on a variety of subscription platforms as well as being for rent on some other streaming services.. You will thank me later for “The Odessa File.”
