Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, let’s go with “The Pentagon Wars” starring Kelsey Grammer and Cary Elwes. “The Pentagon Wars” is an early(ier) effort from HBO at the time of when the non-studio (read “network”) films started to make their mark.
With “The Pentagon Wars” you get the story of the development of the Bradley fighting vehicle. It is taken from a non-fiction book by the military officer who reviewed the building of the Bradley and found Pentagon stupidity (it started out as a no-frills troop carrier to be a mini-tank carrying many fewer soldiers than originally designed), waste, cost overruns and lies … many, many, many lies (mostly told to Congress).
“The Pentagon Wars” has Grammer as the affable, conniving general officer tasked with getting the Bradley into production and his efforts to conceal, hide and otherwise lie about … well, everything associated with it. Enter Elwes as the officer assigned to review the project.
The story of “The Pentagon Wars” then unfolds with the sleazy officers getting promotions and Elwes’ character getting turned out in to early retirement. There’s a wonderful supporting cast, too, headed by Viola Davis and John C. McGinley, and while there’s not much action, the acting is top-notch.
Oh, and those “early” films by HBO include “Barbarians at the Gate,” “And the Band Played On” and “Recount” about the 2000 presidential election were pathfinders to today’s unending production of streaming-only films.
So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “The Pentagon Wars.” It is available on a limited number of subscription services and is available to rent or buy on other streaming services. You will thank me later for “The Pentagon Wars.”
