It was a different age 50 years ago. On some (mostly crime) TV shows, parents would talk about “whipping” their children who had misbehaved. In today’s day and age, such a comment by a parent is more linked to abuse than the discipline inferred in the TV shows of long ago. Here’s a screenshot of an episode of “Dragnet 1967” (Season 1, Episode 16). The actor is very concerned about her son’s behavior – shoplifting – and is telling the detectives what the boy’s father will do when he gets home. I took this photo off our TV screen on May 19, 2021, at our home here in Naples, Fla. (Remember: Click on the small image for a bigger version – then click on that one for the full-size photo.)
