I post examples of errors from everything from closed captioning (click to see them) as well as other assorted idiots (click to see those), but you’ll also find such examples at any dollar store. Here’s just one example: the toy glider in this package is NOT a “Thunderbolt F-47D.” What’s wrong is the “F.” The correct designation of the aircraft from World War II is the Republic P-47D Thunderbolt. Before modern-day fighter aircraft, most fighter aircraft were given the designation “P” … as in the North American P-51 Mustang, the twin-engined Lockheed P-38 Lightning or the P-47. One exception was the Vought F4U Corsair, which flew off aircraft carriers in the Pacific theater of WWII and shared the same huge Pratt & Whitney radial engine as the P-47. The Thunderbolt was nicknamed the “Jug” for its toughness to absorb battle damage and remain flying. Well, I guess the company that made the toy in Ningbo, China, needs an editor, too. Also, the modern Fairchild Republic A-10 ground-attack aircraft is called the Thunderbolt II, or Warthog, as a tribute to the P-47. I got this shot of the toy at our home here in Naples, Fla., on Oct. 16, 2022. The glider is from the toy box at the medical office where I work and give “treasures” to youngsters at the end of their visit.
