OK! It’s the season of Halloween 2022! I’m doing a countdown of my 17 favorite horror flicks that I’ve reviewed for my blog … and today’s finds us at No. 3: “Zombieland.” For myself, zombies grade slightly better as a horror favorite than vampires and “Zombieland” is simply the best-ever zombie film to hit the big screen!
After seeing the original “Dawn of the Dead” in 1978, I didn’t believe I’d ever see a better zombie film. Then, along came “Shaun of the Dead” in 2004 and it was nearly better, but I kept “Dawn of the Dead” as No. 1 because of history. However, history was rewritten with “Zombieland,” which instantly became No. 1 when it arrived in 2009.
Of course, “Zombieland” is the story of a bunch of people who come together as the zombie apocalypse hits the planet. Best of all, the film is creative in bringing together the disparate pieces of humanity and is even creative about their names (the cities to where they’re headed; not their birth names).
Just as creative is how the zombies are dispatched (“zombie kill of the week”), with the best being in a supermarket where one character uses a banjo, a baseball bat and set of hedge clippers (“Just gonna take a little off the top!”)!
The end is predictable, but satisfying.
The sequel to “Zombieland” is “Zombieland: Double Tap” and is somewhat creative itself as it extends the story, but, like most sequels, doesn’t measure up completely to the original. You won’t have any trouble finding either one, so …
