A typical example of the stupidity brought to you by today’s closed captioning brought back a wonderful memory for me. The error was closed captioning having a character call the Manchester United F.C. as “Majesty United.” Well, aside from the pathetic performance by closed captioning today, it brought back a moment from 45 years ago. Today, I know about the Premier League. That’s tops today in the sport of soccer in England. Well, soccer in U.S. terms, as Man United’s “F.C.” shows (that’s Football Club to you). I saw this scene on TV’s “M*A*S*H” episode on Jan. 17, 1978, called “Tea and Empathy.” The British soldiers are recovering and reading letters from home that include a mention of Man United as well as Arsenal and the Queens Park Rangers from the Football League First Division in England of the time. I wasn’t a fan of soccer then, but knew the sport through physical education classes in elementary, middle and high school. For some reason, the scene’s details stayed with me and I remembered the team names. Man United is the legendary Premier League team and Arsenal is still in the league, while Queens Park Rangers now play in the English Football League (the EFL is one step down in the soccer world of England). Ah, nice memory via the stupidity of closed captioning. I got this shot off our home big screen on Feb. 7, 2023.
