Today’s “must” movie is the “brother-flick” Western called “The Long Riders.” It is the story of the James-Younger gang (as in Jesse James) and has the interesting use of brothers portraying each of the family members. With “The Long Riders” you get the Carradines, Keaches, Quaids and the Guests.
Although it is heresy in American cinema, I’m not a big fan of Westerns. I prefer films set in the World War II era. However, just as there are bad WWII films, so there are watchable and outstanding Westerns … and “The Long Riders” is an example of a solid Western.
Directed by Walter “The Warriors” Hill, “The Long Riders” is about Jesse and Frank James (James and Stacey Keach) and the Youngers (David, Keith and Robert Carridine). They’re a violent gang in Missouri in the post-Civil War era and the movie centers not just on violence, but on the emotional threads among them.
I won’t spoil “The Long Riders” with any detailed plot reveals, but let’s just say they’re together; there’s violence; they split up; and then they get back together for their final robbery in Northfield, Minn. The film winds up with the murder of Jesse – and that’s not a plot-reveal.
“The Long Riders” has a big cast but feels like a more personal film. You shouldn’t have much trouble finding “The Long Riders,” so … find it; watch it; and … enjoy it!
