Today’s “must” movie is the penultimate step in my Christmas movie recommendations for 2023: “A Christmas Story.” As has become its own tradition, the playing of “A Christmas Story” for 24-straight hours begins at 8 p.m. tonight (Christmas Eve) on the TBS and TNT networks. No one ever thought that it could be successful to run a movie for 24-straight hours, but they were wrong because “A Christmas Story” is a very special movie.
Of course, you know that “A Christmas Story” is about a boy named “Ralphie” and his quest to receive a Red Ryder lever-action BB gun for Christmas. Through the quest, the story of his family is fleshed out and you meet all the characters from his cursing father to his longsuffering mother to his annoying younger brother to his friends and his schoolyard enemies.
Along the way, you find yourself celebrating the joy of the season with “Ralphie” and the gang in “A Christmas Story” and it winds up in a Chinese restaurant on Christmas Day after the neighbor’s dogs eat the family’s cooked turkey … thereby drawing to a close with most of the season’s stereotypes having been addressed (including a Christmas dinner at a Chinese restaurant).
The most interesting piece of trivia about “A Christmas Story” is that it was almost not made! Director Bob Clark had been wanting to make the film (based on the book “In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash” by Jean Shepherd), but couldn’t get backing to do so. However, the popularity and profit of his raunchy comedy “Porky’s” screamed for a sequel, but told the movie studio he would only do one if he could also make “A Christmas Story.”
Well, that became yet another “story” in someone overcoming the stupidity and lack of vision that has been a hallmark of movie executives since the beginning of the motion picture industry.
Just like all my Christmas(time) film recommendations, you won’t have any trouble finding “A Christmas Story” and you’ll have some fun with it again and again and again and … I guarantee it!
