Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time tonight, let’s watch “Gotcha!” and it’s a film in just about the smallest genre ever from Hollywood: a movie about a game where you pretend to kill someone … on a school campus … with a paintball gun! Oh, boy, that’d go down really smooth today!
“Gotcha!” is actually more of an espionage film when you get right down to it. It’s the story
of a college student who’s majoring in playing a game where you “kill” opponents by shooting them with a paintball gun. Players go to extreme lengths to stalk their prey and evade their would-be “killers.” When they do get a “kill,” they say, “Gotcha!”
The only other film that has this game at its heart is “TAG: The Assassination Game” from 1982, but that entire film is about the game. “Gotcha!” from 1985 is a whole lot more and a much more complete, complex and interesting motion picture.
Anthony Edwards (remember “Goose” from “Top Gun?”) is the main character and the story takes him from California to Paris to Berlin and back home. Sounds kinda “James Bond-ian!” “Gotcha!”
Although the beginning and end on campus in “Gotcha!” is basically stereotypical and really not worthy of the rest of the film, the middle part in Europe is truly excellent in the tradecraft of spies. Edwards hooks up with Linda Fiorentino and becomes embroiled in passing classified information. It plays out to a predictable end, but you’ll find it an interesting journey and not just some fluff.
So, get out there and find “Gotcha!” and you’ll thank me later … I guarantee it!
