Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time tonight, let’s watch Arnold Schwarzenegger in “The Running Man.” Here’s Arnie in some of his most-watchable action outside of “True Lies” with Jamie Lee Curtis and “The Terminator” franchise.
However, while Arnie is his usual watchable self, the movie really belongs to Richard Dawson as the evil host of a TV game show that’s trying to kill Arnie. Of course, Dawson is best remembered as the host of the TV game show “Family Feud” (he did more than 2,300 episodes) and first came to attention in the TV classic series “Hogan’s Heroes.”
Dawson has gleeful fun in “The Running Man” as he sends condemned prisoners to their deaths as they are stalked in a homicidal maze (they’re “runners”) and they are chased and killed by “stalkers.” Again and of course, everything is rigged except when Arnie steps into the maze and becomes a fan favorite killing the “stalkers.”
“The Running Man” tries for political commentary about a fascist state and rebellion, but with Arnie you want action … and you get it! Each “stalker” has a specialized weapon from chainsaws to a flamethrower to electrical power. Still, for the most cruelty you get in “The Running Man” is from Dawson and he almost mocks his own TV career by kissing an elderly lady as he asks her to pick a “stalker” to kill Arnie.
All in all, you can’t go wrong with “The Running Man.” Find it. Watch it. You’ll enjoy it … I guarantee it!
