Hooray for Hollyweird! Baseball season nears, so check out ‘Bad News Bears’

For this year, I’m going with the reminder of the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s check  out the remake of a great film by watching “Bad News Bears” from 2005. The original has “The” in the title, but filmmakers love to change things.

The thing I like about “Bad News Bears” is that it modernizes a 1970s film in a good way: the lead of the film, played by Billy Bob Thornton, is in pest control and not pool maintenance; some of the “kids’” action happens at a skate park, not an arcade; the sponsor for the ball team is a strip club and not a bail bondsman’s office; a physically challenged player is introduced; and, of course, the music has changed.

However, the biggest change for “Bad News Bears” is that the “bad” opposing coach, played by Greg Kinnear, is a nasty bully, but not in the same temperament as in the original. The late Vic Morrow played “Roy Turner” in the original and Kinnear’s character is “Roy Bullock.” Morrow slapped his son in the original, but Kinnear doesn’t go that far – he just knocks his son’s cap off at a tempestuous moment. A nice touch to dial back Morrow’s brutality, which I don’t believe Kinnear is capable of matching under any circumstance.

Still, the best part of “Bad News Bears” remains that the kids come together with the “ringer” of a girl pitcher and an outcast boy, who is a solid athlete. I actually found that I wasn’t offended by the “reboot” of this film.

With baseball season upon us, you’ll easily find “Bad News Bears” in the streaming universe and then you’ll definitely say … “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
