For this year, I’m going with the reminder of the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s watch the World War II flick “Where Eagles Dare” with sensational headliners Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood.
“Where Eagles Dare” isn’t truly a war movie as it is more espionage (the rescue of a U.S. general, whose capture endangers the upcoming D-Day invasion plans), but the action is wonderful and Clint mows ’em down at a rate that this film has his most on-screen “kills” by far.
However, “Where Eagles Dare” is much, much more than some action flick where all the actors do is move you from one explosive scene to the next. The trio of headliners includes Burton, Eastwood and the underrated Mary Ure is supported by a group of lesser-known, but solid actors.
Burton leads a team of commandos into a German castle to rescue the U.S. general and while the team is mostly British, Eastwood rounds it out as does Ure, who is coming along to assist Burton, but without the others’ knowledge.
Burton and Eastwood then proceed to basically kill every high-ranking German office and literally blow up the castle. Clint even has one scene where he’s fighting the Germans pretty much mowing them down double-handedly with an iconic Schmeisser machine pistol in each hand.
It’s a streaming world, but you will be able to find “Where Eagles Dare” … and then you’ll definitely say … “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
