Hooray for Hollyweird! ‘Major League’ is the perfect pitch for MLB’s Opening Day today!

For this year, I’m going with the reminder of the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s get into the spirit of Opening Day of Major League Baseball today (March 27, 2025) and have fun with “Major League.”

Here’s baseball’s version of golf’s “Caddyshack” with the home team expected to be a bunch of losers … but just the opposite. “Major League” became an instant comedy classic when it arrived in 1989: the Cleveland Indians (now the Guardians) had not been in the baseball playoffs since losing the World Series in 1954, but the movie team ended that (the real team didn’t that season and didn’t make it back to the World Series until 1995 and last won a World Series in 1948).

Of course, the signature call of “Major League” is when the pitcher known as “Wild Thing” threw a pitch so far off home plate that the catcher missed and it hit the backstop. “Just a bit outside,” said legendary broadcaster Bob Uecker in an ad-libbed scene. Even today, if someone misses a mark in anything from sport to throwing something in a garbage can, if they miss badly, it’s “… just a bit outside!”

From the late Uecker to headliners Tom Berenger, Charlie “Wild Thing” Sheen and Corbin Bernsen to the characters including voodoo adherent “Pedro Cerano” and the god “Jobu” he calls to help his hitting, you get a solid group of actors that make you laugh. You even get the wonderful Rene Russo as the love interest of aging catcher Berenger.

All-in-all, baseball season wouldn’t really start any longer without watching “Major League” … so warm up your “… just a bit outside …” and be ready for the games today. It’s a streaming world, so you can find “Major League” and it will be all over many networks … and then you’ll definitely say … “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
