All U.S. flags should be flying flying at half-staff now in remembrance of Pope Francis, who died April 21, 2025, at the age of 88 (his birth name was Jorge Mario Bergoglio and he was born in Argentina). As usual, the staff of the Headquarters branch of the Collier County Public Library here in Naples, Fla., followed the half-staff order and I got this shot at the front of the branch yesterday afternoon (April 21). There is a protocol for the “official” flying of U.S. flags … and it begins with a presidential decree. President Donald Trump put the current one into effect and flags will remain at half-staff until the interment. Remember, too, that traditionally, half-staff is for land-based flagpoles, while half-mast is aboard U.S.-chartered ships.
