Hooray for Hollyweird! ‘2 Days in the Valley’ one of best not to win an Oscar

We’re headed to the summer of 2025 and I’m continuing the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s get back to some dark, violent drama with “2 Days in the Valley” as one of the best films ever ignored for an Oscar despite deserving for film, director, best actor/actress and best supporting actor/actress.

“2 Days in the Valley” is a violent film and its violence and erotica knock it deep into R-rated territory from a psychotic killer (James Spader) to a stumbling former hitman making a return to crime (Danny Aiello) to a supporting cast that most directors could only dream of having for their film: Marsha Mason, Louise Fletcher, a young Charlize Theron and especially the late legendary director Paul Mazursky as a flawed but honest man who ultimately drives the entire film.

Also, there are others competent in “2 Days in the Valley,” but who do not reach Oscar territory: Terri Hatcher (who has one of cinema’s great catfights with Theron), Keith Carradine and Jeff Daniels. Wow. I simply cannot understand how a film this visceral; a film so excellent; and a story told so well could only generate enough ticket sales to have been ranked 119th in 1996 at the U.S. box office.

In short, the storyline of “2 Days in the Valley” is that a hitman (Spader) has a job to do (get money from and kill Hatcher’s ex-) and Aiello is along to assist. It all twists around when Aiello escapes Spader’s clutches and drags an innocent idiot into the plot that then brings in the rest of the supporting cast. I won’t go any further, but let you enjoy seeing it for yourself.

Go ahead and check out “2 Days in the Valley” … we’re in a streaming day and then you’ll definitely say … “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
