Hooray for Hollyweird! ‘The 40 Year Old Virgin’ will leave you on the floor

We’re at the beginning of the summer of 2025 and I’m continuing the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s put a pillow on the floor because we need to watch “The 40 Year Old Virgin” and its fall-down, puerile humor for the umpteenth time! Yes, it’s that time again and “The 40 Year Old Virgin” never disappoints … no matter how many times you’ve seen it.

Led by title character Steve Carell’s chest-hair waxing scene, “The 40 Year Old Virgin” lays down slapstick, obscene and vulgar jokes from a big box electronics store, to the salon, to a speed-dating session and on to a teenagers’ meeting about contraceptives. From the first moment to the last, you’ll be laughing so hard that you’ll have to back up the film to catch the joke you missed because you’re on the floor!

In “The 40 Year Old Virgin,” Carell is a 40-year-old who is a virgin and he’s actually happy with his life. However, he does want to get a girlfriend and his friends try to lend a hand in the most hilarious ways possible. He even has a boss who wants to be his … well, let’s just say the second word is “buddy.”

You get the cream of the comedy crop with “The 40 Year Old Virgin,” as Judd Apatow is in the director’s chair and he co-wrote the screenplay (along with Carell) and you’ll find Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, Jane Lynch and Jonah Hill (he has a very small role) as well as two-time Oscar nominee Catherine Keener, who is object of Carell’s desire.

Carell’s scene where he starts to get his chest hair waxed will leave you breathless from laughter. As a matter of filmmaking fact, it was done in one take – and Carell had his chest hair for real ripped out by the salon employee. His friends’ reactions are just as hilarious as Carell’s screaming comments. They are priceless with one saying, “You know what? I got a really weak stomach, that’s all I can take.” Another says, “You look like a man-o-lantern!” Damn, I almost died of laughter just getting the link to the video of the scene!

Ah, well … such comedy rules in the whole film, especially what the fathers have to say at the meeting about contraceptives. Also, there’s an interesting backstory I explain in my full review as to why the film’s title had had so many different spellings!

So, it’s summertime and summer is the time for comedy … we’re in a streaming day and you can easily find “The 40 Year Old Virgin” … and then you’ll definitely say … “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
