Ticket to the Movies: ‘The Trouble With Angels’ is much, much better than you’d believe

Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, today let’s go back to the mid-1960s for a story about Catholic schoolgirls being bad (no, not those kind of “Catholic schoolgirls!”) with “The Trouble With Angels” co-starring the wonderful Rosalind Russell and Hayley Mills.

“The Trouble With Angels” is the story of a girl (Mills) headed to and later graduating from a convent school. She’s a rebel and therefore manages to get into situations from her “scathingly brilliant” ideas. The stumbling block is represented by the convent’s Mother Superior (Russell).

Well, while “The Trouble With Angels” is “family friendly” and somewhat of a “kids” movie, it is more a tour-de-force by Russell, who should have won an Academy Award for her work in it. However, Hollywood only infrequently allows a film with faith to bring home the Oscar.

While Mills does her typically solid job, Russell is in the spotlight frequently and manages to make a stolid character both likable and endearing. I often re-watch “The Trouble With Angels” just to again marvel in the characterization that she brought to the big screen as I’m living in an age of creative and emotional vacancy in 999 out of 1,000 movies released today.

While “The Trouble With Angels” is Russell’s film (also Mills’), the supporting cast is solid and highlighted by Mary Wickes’ portrayal of a nun who teaches phys-ed and drives the school bus. Actually, the worst you can say about anyone in the supporting cast is that they do a workmanlike job and manage to support the foundation of a solid movie.

“The Trouble With Angels” isn’t just for youngsters, even though you won’t find an F-bomb or even a single drop of blood. You’ll need a little focus to understand the message about faith, developing faith and continuing faith … all without any of it being preachy.

So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “The Trouble With Angels.” It is available pretty much for rental-only on a variety of streaming services. Find it! Watch it! Don’t worry, you’ll thank me later for “The Trouble With Angels.”
