I’m combining two annual “days” on the calendar with this blog post on April 5, 2026: It is both national Read a Road Map Day and national Flash Drive Day. The two are pretty much mutually exclusive, but I’m bringing them together for convenience sake! Road maps have pretty much gone the way of the dodo bird with today’s GPS systems built into cars, smartphones and soon to be implanted with a chip in our noggins! Those of us old enough will remember getting one on vacation at “gas stations” and having a tough time folding back into their original shape. Road and other maps will only make a comeback with the complete failure of computer networks. I’ve included a small compass in the photo above as another anachronistic device! As for flash drives, they are becoming less and less important with the advent of cloud technology and the ubiquitousness of smartphones, but they can hold a ton of data and go in usually through a USB port. The one shown in this photo can hold 116 gigabytes of memory. I got this shot at our home here in Naples, Fla., on April 5, 2026.
