Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, today, I’m going to recommend “Rough Cut” from 1980 that stars Burt Reynolds, David Niven and Lesley-Anne Down. “Rough Cut” isn’t a good flick, but you’ll have fun with it and that’s why it ranks as very watchable in my opinion.
“Rough Cut’s” production was a carousel of directors with the first being fired; the second being fired; and the first re-hired after the second was fired; and then another was brought in for shooting some extra scenes after the film went into final editing! Wow!
Plus, and this is my favorite piece of trivia for “Rough Cut,” screenwriter Larry Gelbart of TV’s “M*A*S*H” fame, hated the final cut and had his name removed. Instead, you’ll find his name listed in the credits as “Francis Burns.” You know, the “M*A*S*H” character best remembered as the nebbish “Maj. Frank Burns.”
So, back to “Rough Cut” and what you’ll see on-screen.
“Rough Cut” is a caper film in which Reynolds is a ex-pat from the U.S. living in London and operating his own restaurant. He’s also the world’s premier jewel thief. Niven, who’s headed to retirement from Scotland Yard, wants to crown his career by catching Reynolds and making worldwide headlines with the arrest.
Down, who is being blackmailed by Niven after he caught her stealing jewels, become the trap that’s supposed to snap shut on Burt. You’ll have to watch “Rough Cut” for the rest since the plot has a bunch of twists and turns that are obvious, but you’re having too much fun to mind the obvious plot and many stereotypes.
So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and you can find “Rough Cut” only for rent on several streaming services. So, find it! Watch it! Enjoy it! Don’t worry, you’ll thank me later for “Rough Cut.”
