Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, I’m going to recommend the action cult fav “Escape from New York” from iconic director John Carpenter and starring Kurt Russell, Harry Dean Stanton, Adrienne Barbeau, Ernest Borgnine, Lee Van Cleef and Issac Hayes.

“Escape from New York” has all the elements of what should have been a great flick: Its plot is creative; it has a wonderful cast from the top right down through the supporting efforts; and Carpenter was just nearly three years removed from his immediate horror classic “Halloween.”

Despite all those potential positives, “Escape from New York” just doesn’t come together as a great film. Yes, it is totally watchable and certainly earns its status as a cult favorite, but Carpenter never manages to craft and entire flick out of these solid components.

With “Escape from New York,” you get Manhattan Island as a prison: It has been walled off and prisoners, who are the worst of the worst, are just dumped into the former city after first getting the option of choosing capital punishment by an electric chair instead of being left to the human predators in the so-called prison.

The president of the United States’ jet crash-lands on Manhattan and Russell, a former war hero turned anti-hero, is offered and accepts a mission to go into Manhattan and rescue the president. Russell just totally becomes the character of “J.D. ‘Snake’ Plissken.”

Russell must find his way to the president, who convicts will try to use to break out of Manhattan by being a hostage, and encounters a group of strange individuals (including a mastermind with an oil derrick in a building that allows the most powerful gang, led by Hayes, to have gasoline for their cars). Whew! What a story!

The story of “Escape from New York” plays it out from there and I’ll let you remember the ending yourself.

So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “Escape from New York.” It is available for rent or as part of a subscription on a limited number of streaming services. So, find it! Watch it! Don’t worry, you’ll thank me later (maybe, or maybe not) for “Escape from New York.”
