The cost of making chili has risen appreciably in the current economic chaos (of course, beef chili; not the milquetoast chicken or turkey versions). The “lean” ground beef, usually the second-highest price among ground beef packages, was on sale today at Publix – Naples Walk at $9.49/pound. Go up to ground Chuck? Add 50 cents or so per pound. If you go to ground sirloin, a couple of dollars per pound. Oh, basic ground beef? Above $8/pound. Ouch! I had to try a different chili pepper, so, along with my usual Serrano and Jalepeno, so I added the red peppers because the Publix did not offer my favorite: Habanero. I believe they are Fresno peppers, similar in heat to Jalepeno, so this will be a very mild batch of chili by my usual standard. I took this photo (actually, I staged it) in our kitchen here in Naples, Fla., today (Wednesday, May 13, 2026).
