We noticed an immensely tall growth out of a plant on the edge of our backyard neighbor’s property. It turns out to be the most interesting plant I’ve ever seen: the Agave americana, also known as the Century Plant. It’s towering flower spike takes 10 years to 25 years of plant growth to emerge and grows up to 30 feet tall in just a matter of weeks. Ultimately, the entire plant dies after this blooming
The plant shown in this photo is approximately 20 feet tall and in March, there was no sign of the flower spike (see the second photo that I enlarged from another of our patio). Although called the “Century Plant,” the internet notes: “… it doesn’t actually take 100 years to bloom. In warm climates like Florida, it usually takes about 10 to 25 years to reach maturity and send up this stalk.” Further, once the blooms fade, the entire plant dies. Again, from the internet: “Agaves are monocarpic, meaning they bloom only once in their lifetime and then die. Once the flowers fade and seed pods form, the main rosette at the bottom will completely wither and dry up.”
I took the photo of the towering spike today (Sunday, May 17, 2026) from the backyard of our home here in Naples, Fla. I’m going to photograph and post photos as this Agave americana continues its once-in-a-lifetime growth. PS: The Agave americana, one of several species used in the production of tequila, is not a cactus … it is in the asparagus plant family!
