Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, let’s dial our cinematic time machine back to 1955 for the excellent drama “Mister Roberts” with Henry Fonda, James Cagney, William Powell and Jack Lemmon.
Some might have the impression that “Mister Roberts” is a somewhat comedy-drama set in World War II along the lines of an “Operation Petticoat” from 1959 with Cary Grant and Tony Curtis or “Father Goose” from 1964 with Grant and Leslie Caron. That impression would be wrong.
Of course, “Mister Roberts” has some lighter moments, but mostly it is drama and the conflict of an officer (Fonda) who is on a supply ship far away from combat in the latter stages of the war in the Pacific theater. He wants to get into the action, but the ship’s despotic, cruel skipper (Cagney) won’t allow him to transfer.
“Mister Roberts” wends its way as Fonda tries to protect the crew from the skipper as well as continue to work to get his beloved transfer. Both Powell, as the ship’s doctor, and Lemmon, who plays a character whose name you might recall (“Ensign Pulver”) as another ship’s officer, give sterling performances worth your time.
Of course, “Mister Roberts” wends its way to a somewhat obvious conclusion, but it’s not the “everybody is overjoyed” kind of ending some folks might be under the impression that such films would project.
So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “Mister Roberts.” It is available to rent on a number of streaming services. So, find it! Watch it! Don’t worry, you’ll thank me later for “Mister Roberts.”
