Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, my summer theme continues today with getting out for some golf with the regrettably failed “Tin Cup” starring Kevin Costner and Rene Russo and a nice supporting cast that includes Don Johnson and Cheech Marin.
I write “regrettably failed” because “Tin Cup” had a lot of promise with director and co-writer Ron Sheldon trying to accomplish with “Tin Cup” what he achieved with Costner in the seminal baseball flick “Bull Durham.” Unlike the latter, “Tin Cup” fails at all levels from how Sheldon forces golf lore and golfing in general to a lack of chemistry between Costner and Russo and an overall lack of pure direction.
With “Tin Cup,” you get Costner as a somewhat sleazy golf pro at a driving range. You find he has great talent, but a peer (Johnson) went on to a great pro career, while Costner simmered in a tepid backwater. Enter Russo for a golf lesson … and she’s Johnson’s girlfriend to boot. OK, you got the setup, but the deliver disappoints on all levels.
However, “Tin Cup” is a golf flick and golfers need to watch golf movies. All golfers will recognize golf “stuff” from getting the “shanks” to a proposition bet to the jokes with your buddies in the clubhouse (or driving range pro shop – although standing-alone driving ranges are an endangered species today), but the film tries to force each one and the talent of the cast is completely misued.
Through Costner, Russo, Johnson and Marin (Costner’s driving range partner and longtime caddie), you are supposed to learn the spirituality of the game with “Tin Cup,” but you just get a bunch of vignettes (mostly silly and strained) leading up to Costner competing in the U.S. Open.
So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “Tin Cup.” You can rent “Tin Cup” on a variety of streaming services. You’ll thank me later when you watch “Tin Cup” today!
