Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, while I’m all-in on raunchy, R-rated comedies, I also enjoy your basic teen comedy and a solid example is “Can’t Buy Me Love” with Patrick Dempsey, Amanda Peterson and Seth Green.

“Can’t Buy Me Love” has all the stereotypes you’ve seen before and often, but it is also endearing and will leave you humming the Beatles’ tune used as the title. The cast, while not A-list material, is solid throughout and there are fewer cinematic embarrassments than you’d initially imagine.

Further, “Can’t Buy Me Love” is one of the very few films in which a co-star is age-appropriate to the character. Peterson was just 15 during filming in 1987 and plays a high school senior. Usually, these Hollywood tales has a much older woman as the high schooler (Olivia Newton-John was 29 when “Grease” came out in 1978).

With “Can’t Buy Me Love,” you get Dempsey as the typical high school nerd: He’s smart; he’s got a work ethic and a lawn-mowing business to prove it; and he’d really enjoy being “cool.” Enter Peterson as the No. 1 girl at school and the object of his desire.

Through a twist of fate involving Peterson, her mother’s suede outfit and a glass of wine, Dempsey is able to “buy” her – that is, “rent” her to pitch him at school as “cool.” Of course, this works initially; then comes his Waterloo once he’s accepted into the “cool” group; and finally your basic happy ending.

I truly enjoyed the scene in “Can’t Buy Me Love” where Dempsey takes Peterson to an airplane “graveyard” in the desert where junked aircraft dating back to World War II are stored (it is the real-life Davis-Monthan Air Force Base “Aircraft Boneyard” near Tucson, Ariz.).

So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “Can’t Buy Me Love.” It is available for rent via a variety of  streaming services. Without any doubt, you will thank me later when you watch “Can’t Buy Me Love” today!
