Each Aug. 7 is national Lighthouse Day! It is a day for appreciation of the interesting structures, according to the American Lighthouse Foundation. Since today is Friday, Aug. 7, 2026, I’m showing you my photos of lighthouses. However, only one of the three that I have photographed is in the U.S. and it is from Walt Disney World. The others are one from Peggy’s Cove in Canada’s Nova Scotia and the other on Paradise Island at the entrance to the harbor at Nassau on the island of New Providence in the Bahamas. As for the U.S., In 1789, the U.S. Congress passed an act securing the protection of all lighthouses under federal support and, 200 years later, codified the “holiday” for each Aug. 7.
A little history/trivia/facts:

The lighthouse at Walt Disney World is decorative and is situated at the end of the dock that serves as a watercraft transportation center for Disney’s Yacht Club Resort and Disney’s Beach Club Resort. Of course, it is part of the aesthetics of the resorts and is on Cresent Lake. Click here to see my photos of the lighthouse at WDW …
As for the “real” lighthouses, the one in Canada is Peggy’s Point Lighthouse – and “Peggy’s” is spelled online with and without the possessive apostrophe. In reality, Nova Scotia does not like formal titles containing apostrophes) and so both forms appear across various resources. We visited Peggy’s Cove several times during cruise ship excursions on visits to Nova Scotia (which is Latin for New Scotland). The first lighthouse at Peggy’s Cove was built in 1868. The other international lighthouse I have photographed (also during a cruise) is at the entrance to the harbor at Nassau in the Bahamas. The original structure was built in 1817 and today, some call it the Paradise Island Lighthouse because it is on Paradise Island that is home to a major luxury resort called Atlantis. Previously, the land mass was called Hog Island. Click here to see the photos from the Bahamas on my blog …
